Dear Parents,
Yesterday I was telling you about how our teens brains literally go through a period of growth at the time of adolescence. This is noted by an increase in brain cells, and a thickening of the grey matter, which is the "thinking" part of the brain.
With those new brain cells comes the development of abstract thinking. For example, we generally teach algebra to kids in high school and not before. This is because the part of the brain that can understand abstract concepts like algebra are just not developed before this time.
The good news is that they are now able to take on education at a whole new level and are able to get into some advanced concepts. The "other" news, is with their new found thinking skills, they are able to consider life outside of the box of your home, your rules, your values, etc. This is a time when they will naturally start to question and challenge you. It is actually part of their development.
How you experience this new horizon depends on the quality of your relationship.
As a parent, I learned that communication is a skill. And just like any other skill, sometimes we need some new information and practice in order to improve and adapt to new situations.
I am here to help you along that journey.
