Dear Parents,
Yesterday I talked about the importance of the needto feel loved. Today let’s explore a little about the importance of being able to give love and affection.
Pet therapy is an example of this concept that is widely used today. Pets have the quality of providing unconditional love and acceptance. People are able to connect with pets, expressing affection for them and knowing that their affection will be accepted unconditionally. Love and acceptance are powerful emotions that can soften an angry heart, and promote both physical and emotional healing.
Within the family setting, it is important for family members to be able to express love and have that accepted by another human being. It is the basis of our feeling of human connection. For example, Ann may express her love and affection for her Mom in a number of different ways. Simple conversation and humor are common ways of sharing a bond between parent and child. Sometimes sitting together to enjoy a TV show together can be another form of sharing a connection that is more subtle, but the feeling is there.
Dr. Gary Chapman has written several books on the topic of the “Five Love Languages”, which are excellent resources to learn more about this topic.
