Five Ways That Non -Verbal Communication Impacts Your Teen

Dear Parents,

We communicate a lot non-verbally.  One thing that you can do to improve your relationship with your teen is...

·         Make body contact – Generally, teens are not averse to having their parents hug or touch them.   Placing your hand gently on her back or her arm is a non-verbal way of being connected and communicating that you love her.  If you are on the phone, or can't give your attention right in that moment, it is a nice way to communicate that you acknowledge that your child is there, without actually talking.

Sitting away from them can signify that you are standoffish about what they are saying. Sit next to them so that they know they have your attention and that you care. It provides security even though they may act like they don’t need it.

Also, sit next to them when you are watching TV.  You might not get the kind of  "snuggle" time like you did when they were little, but they will enjoy leaning back against you, and the closeness definitely communicates love both for them and for you.
