The Fourth tip for improving your listening skills is:
· Communicate what you heard – Sometimes what we hear is not exactly what is being said. When your teen finishes speaking, simply repeat back to them what you heard them say so that there is no miscommunication from the start.
This step can be really powerful for both you and your teen. Especially when you feel like you have "heard this all before". You see, when you have "heard this all before" this is some assumption that you are making, that probably upsets or annoys you. But that might not be what your teen is trying to communicate. When you communicate back what you heard, you want to do it in such a way that you consider the possibility that your understanding might not be correct, and you are open to hearing it another way. This let's your teen know that you are open and fair. Your teen now has a model for such communication, and chances are much better that they will be open and fair with you in return.
