Five Ways That Non -Verbal Communication Impacts Your Teen

Dear Parents,

What is non-verbal communication?  You might think of it as your body language.

Kids and teenagers are quite astute. They pick up on your emotional state from how you act.  Pay attention to what you are communicating. For example...

·         Are you using open non-verbal gestures? – When you sit and talk with your teen, do you keep your arms at your sides or on the arm of the chair? Do you  cross your legs or crossing your arms.   Open gestures convey a willingness to listen.  If you catch yourself having "relaxed" into a position with your arms crossed in front of you, just notice it and see if there is anything about the conversation that you are resisting. Don't feel compelled to have to change anything, it's just a great tool to elevate your own awareness.

A  If you have placed your hands on your hips or are  pointing fingers at your teen, recognize that this communicates frustration and confrontation. Is that what you want to communicate in this moment?  If not, take a deep breath and try to relax a little.  This will help you to be more receptive to your teens point of view.
