Five Ways That Non -Verbal Communication Impacts Your Teen

Dear Parents,

·         Be mindful of your facial expressions.– It is easy to frown or roll your eyes when your teen says something that you don’t like. That sends the message to them that you disapprove of them or of what they are saying.  Just that little expression might put them on the defensive.  Instead of simply communicating something to you, now they are fighting with you, and you haven't even said a word.

Facial expressions can communicate that we have stopped listening and started judging.  To your teen it feels like they are not getting through to you, and it is very frustrating.

Instead, try to smile when appropriate or keep your expression neutral.
